Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake in Michigan is one of those hidden gems that feels like it came straight out of a postcard. Here’s why it’s worth a visit:
Stunning Water
- True to its name, Crystal Lake is incredibly clear and clean, with a brilliant blue hue that rivals Caribbean waters.
- It’s the 9th largest inland lake in Michigan, but often less crowded than some of the more famous ones.
Beaches
- There are multiple public access points around Crystal lake for swimming, paddling, boating or just relaxing by the water.
Betsie Valley Trail
- A 22-mile trail running from Frankfort to Thompsonville a large stretch of it between Frankfort and Beulah takes you along the lake. Ideal for biking, walking, or running with lake views. We recommend renting e-bikes from Coastal Cycles and taking the trail from Frankfort to Beulah and then back.
Boating & Water Sports
- The lake is deep and open enough for all kinds of watercraft but still peaceful. We love taking our pontoon boat out on Crystal Lake. It allows us to swim in deeper water where we are free from swimmers itch.
Fishing
- In summer, Crystal Lake offers great fishing for lake trout and rainbow trout in deeper water, plus smallmouth bass, perch, rock bass, and northern pike near shore and weed beds. Coho salmon show up more toward late summer, and walleye can be caught too, mainly at dawn or dusk. Whether trolling or casting, anglers can enjoy a fun mix all season.
Charming Towns
- Beulah and Frankfort are quaint towns with cozy shops, ice cream, coffee spots, breweries and restaurants.
- They both have classic “Up North” Michigan feel—relaxing and friendly.
Proximity to Lake Michigan
- Just minutes away from Lake Michigan beaches and the Point Betsie Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the state.
Near Sleeping Bear Dunes
- Crystal Lake is only about 30 minutes from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—ideal for a day trip to hike, climb dunes, or explore the scenic drive. The southern boarder of SLDNL touches the north shore of Crystal Lake.

- It’s peaceful without being too remote. Great for couples, families, or solo travelers looking to unplug.
